KAIST Professors Hyungjun Kim and Haewon McJeon Appointed as Lead Authors for IPCC Seventh Assessment Report

• International recognition for contributions to climate science and policy research; joining AR7 to advance global climate action

August 18, 2025 – The KAIST Graduate School of Global Green Growth (GGGS) and the Moon Soul Graduate School of Future Strategy (GFS) announced that Professor Hyungjun Kim and Professor Haewon McJeon have been selected as Lead Authors for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Seventh Assessment Report (AR7).

The IPCC Assessment Reports are published approximately every six to seven years and are regarded as the most authoritative scientific assessments influencing global climate policy, international negotiations, and national response strategies. The ongoing Seventh Assessment Report (AR7), scheduled for publication in 2029, brings together hundreds of scholars worldwide to synthesize the latest scientific findings and policy insights on climate change.

Prof. Hyungjun Kim will serve as a Lead Author for Working Group I, Chapter 1, which addresses the physical science basis of climate change, contributing to strengthening the scientific foundation of the report.

Prof. Haewon McJeon will serve as a Lead Author for Working Group III, Chapter 11, focusing on mitigation strategies in the transport and mobility sector. As transport is one of the major sources of global greenhouse gas emissions, his contribution is expected to have significant international impact.

The appointments follow a rigorous international selection process conducted by the IPCC, recognizing the professors’ significant contributions to climate science and policy research. KAIST GGGS is committed to advancing sustainable solutions for climate change and will fully support Professors Kim and McJeon as they bring their expertise to AR7. Their participation exemplifies KAIST’s dedication to international collaboration and science-based climate action.
